The incomparable Script Ohio

Most of these songs are performed by The Best Damn Band in the Land(TBDBITL), The Ohio State University Marching Band. Visit their website at http://tbdbitl.osu.edu/ to learn more about the band and buy their recordings (recommened: "Pride of the Buckeyes, Vol. II", "Road to the National Championship", "New Era", "Hang on Sloopy", and "Buckeye Battle Cry"). Some material on this page (specifically, the nearly unknown second verse of "Buckeye Battle Cry" and the in-between choruses lyrics for "Fight the Team") has been taken from The Songs of The Ohio State University website (link below). This is an excellent site for anyone who is interested in OSU songs and is impecabbly researched.

I have used brackets immediately following words to indicate different versions that have been used. For example, Crumit's original version begins "In old Columbus" rather then "In old Ohio". So I have written this as "In old Ohio[Columbus]". Not noted in the lyrics, Fight the Team orginally, instead of "so let's win that old conference now", called for "So beat [blank] now", where the blank was the opponent done in such a way to make it fit. Examples are "that Ill-i-ni" or "In-di-a-na" or "that Wis-con-sin".

Buckeye Battle Cry

-Frank Crumit

In old Ohio[Columbus] there's a team that's known throughout the land

Eleven warriors brave and bold whose fame will ever stand

And when the ball goes over, our cheers will reach the sky

Ohio Field will hear again the Buckeye Battle Cry

Drive, drive on down the field

Men of the Scarlet and Gray

Don't let them through that line

We have to win this game today (for Ohio!)

Smash through to victory, we cheer you as we[you] go

Our honor defend we will fight to the end for Ohio!

Second Verse:

We'll scatter to the east and west

when college days are done

and memories will cling around

the dreams of everyone

We'll play the game of living

With head and shoulders high

And where in wear the spirit

of Buckeye Battle Cry

Fight the Team (Across the Field)

-William A. Dougherty, Jr.

Fight the[that] team across the field

Show them Ohio's here

And set the earth reverbertating with a mighty cheer

RAH, RAH, RAH

Hit them hard and see how they fall

Never let that team get the ball

Hail, hail the gang's all here so let's win that old conference now!

Oh, Ohio! Oh, Ohio! Wahoo! Wahoo for Ohio!

Carmen Ohio

-Fred Cornell

Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise

And songs to Alma Mater raise

While our hearts rebounding thrill

With joy which death alone can still

Summer's heat or winter's cold

The seasons pass, the years will roll

Time and change will surely[truly] show

How firm thy friendship...OHIO!

These jolly days of priceless worth

By far the gladdest days on earth

Soon will pass and we not know

How dearly we love Ohio

We should strive to keep thy name

Of fair repute and spotless fame

So in college halls we'll grow

And love thee better...OHIO!

Though age may dim our memory's store

We'll think of happy days of yore

True to friend and frank to foe

As sturdy sons of Ohio

If on seas of care we roll

Neath blackened sky or barren shoal

Thoughts of thee bid darkness go

Dear Alma Mater...OHIO!

Hang on Sloopy

-The McCoys

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Sloopy lives in a very bad part of town

And everybody else tries to put my Sloopy down

Sloopy, I don't care what your daddy do

Cause you know, Sloopy girl, I'm in love with you

And so I sing out

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Sloopy wears a red dress, yeah

As old as the hills

But when Sloopy wears that red dress, yeah

You know it gives me the chills

Sloopy when I see you walking, walking down the street

I say don't worry Sloopy girl, you belong to me

And so I sing out

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Give it to me now, hey

Sloopy let your hair down girl, let it hang down on me

Sloopy let your hair down girl, let it hang down on me

Come on Sloopy(come on, come on)

Well come on Sloopy(come on, come on)

Well come on Sloopy(come on, come on)

Well come on Sloopy(come on, come on)

Well it feels so good(come on, come on)

You know it feels so good(come on, come on)

Well shake it shake it shake it Sloopy(come on, come on)

Well shake it shake it shake it yeah(come on, come on)

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on(yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on(yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on

Le Regiment (de Sambre et Meuse)

-Jean Robert Planquette

All these proud children of Gaule

Went without (unknown) and rest

With their rifles on the shoulder

Courage in the heart and bag with the back

Glory was their food

They were without bread, without shoes

The night they slept on the hard ground

With their bags for a pillow

The regiment of Sambre and Meuse

Always went to the cries of freedom

Seeking the glorious road

Who led to immortality

To  beat us, they were a hundred and a thousand

At their head, they had kings

The general, weak old man

Weakens for the first time

Indicator certain the defeat

It brings together all these soldiers

Then the retirement should be beaten

But they did not listen to it

The shock was similar to the lightning

It was a combat of giant

Drunk of glory, drunk of powder

To die, they tightened the rows

The regiment by the grapeshot

Was attacked of everywhere

However, alive wall

Impassive, remained upright

The number was right of courage

A soldier remained--the last

It was defended with rage

But soon prisoner was made

By seeing this savage hero

The enemy cried over his fate

The hero took a cartridge

The Jura, then gave itself death

The regiment of Sambre and Meuse

Accepted deat with the cry of freedom

But its glorious history

He give the right to immortality!

I Wanna Go Back

-Unknown

I wanna go back to Ohio State

To old Columbus town

To the stadium to hear the band

By far the finest in the land
I wanna go back to Ohio State

To old Columbus town

I wanna go back, I gotta go back

To Ohio

Ohio, Ohio

The hills send back the cry...O-H

Were here to do or die...I-O

Ohio, Ohio

We'll win the game or know the reason why

And when we win the game, we'll buy a keg of booze

And we'll drink to old Ohio till we wobble in our shoes

Ohio, Ohio, we'll win the game or know the reason why

Ohio

It's Round on the Ends

-Unknown

It's Round on the ends and hi in the middle

Don't you think thats a cute little riddle

Round on the ends and hi in the middle

You can find it on a map if you look high and low

The O's are round, it's hi in the middle

O-H-I-O thats our riddle

Round on the ends and hi in the middle

Beautiful Ohio-Original

-Ballard McDonald

I sailed away
Wandered afar
Crossed the mighty restless sea
Looked for where I ought to be
Cities so grand, mountains above

Led to this land I love

Drifting with the current down a moonlit stream
While above the Heavens in their glory gleam
And the stars on high
Twinkle in the sky
Seeming in a paradise of love divine
Dreaming of a pair of eyes that looked in mine
Beautiful Ohio, in dreams again I see
Visions of what used to be

Beautiful Ohio-New

-William B. McBride

I sailed away
Wandered afar
Crossed the mighty restless sea
Looked for where I ought to be
Cities so grand, mountains above

Led to this land I love

Beautiful Ohio, where the golden grain
Dwarf the lovely flowers in the summer rain
Cities rising high, silhouette the sky
Freedom is supreme in this majestic land
Mighty factories seem to hum in tune, so grand.
Beautiful Ohio, thy wonders are in view
Land where my dreams all come true!
